Rehearsals, how they work.
If you take a look at the Green Room page on this site you will see how the current show is being put together…
Young Gen employs a professional Director to set the show taking the actors through the dialogue and moves; they also choreograph the dance numbers. This Director works alongside a professional Music Director who takes the cast through the musical numbers enabling the soloists to learn their songs and the ensemble to learn the harmonies for the chorus sections. These professionals are assisted by a volunteer Production Assistant and Dance Captain who make up the final production team.
Rehearsals are broken down into three distinct types; music calls, setting calls and revision calls.
Music calls usually take place before and just after the audition process prior to the director coming in to start setting the show. These music calls take place at the Young-Gen HQ on Thursday evenings starting at 7:30 and finishing at 10pm.
Setting calls are when the Director starts putting the show together by telling the actors what they will do and when. Setting calls take place on selected Thursdays starting at 7:30pm and Saturdays usually 10am through to 5pm (the “call sheet” will let you know the times you are required). You will need a pencil to write notes either in your script (to be erased before you return it if it's a hired one) or in a note pad. Setting calls are very important, if you cannot attend for any reason it is essential that you find someone to stand in for you.
Revision calls take place in between setting calls these are when the cast go over what has been set by the director. Again it is essential that all sessions are attended. The Assistant Director and Dance Captain take these calls.
As the show starts to come together you will notice set being built, props being organised, costume fittings taking place, there are many people involved in putting on a show, not just the actors. All of these people give their help voluntarily and without these volunteers there would not be a show.
The weekend before the show goes on at the theatre the cast will work at HQ doing a run through of the show. On the Sunday you will be at the theatre doing a technical rehearsal this is where all the lighting, sound and scene changes are tested. This is followed by a full dress rehearsal; this will be first time you will do the show on stage with costume, props, lighting, full band and scenery before opening night.
Tech and Dress is a very long day usually starting at 10am and finishing, well when its finished, this could be 9pm but has been known run later.
When the show goes on at the Theatre you will be given an information sheet about how it all works, there are strict guidelines set down by the local council regarding young people performing, we have to abide by these. It is for this reason that all of the adults involved in the group are up to date with the necessary legally required police checks.
